When the Old Insulation Has to Go
Insulation removal is not always needed. Often new insulation can go right over what is there. But in older Duluth houses we regularly find attic insulation that should come out first: soaked and matted from years of ice dam leaks, full of mouse or squirrel droppings, or so thin and packed down that it hides the gaps that need sealing. Sealing an attic properly means getting at the top plates and bypasses, and sometimes that is only possible after the old material is removed.
How removal works
We use a high-powered insulation vacuum that pulls loose fill out through a hose into bags or a collection unit outside. Batts are bagged by hand. We seal off the attic access and protect the house below. Once the attic is clear we can see the framing, find the leaks, and fix damage before anything new goes in.
Vermiculite
Vermiculite looks like gray-brown or gold pebbles. Some vermiculite contains asbestos, so if we see it we stop and recommend testing. If it tests positive, removal has to be done by an asbestos abatement contractor. HomeAdvisor lists asbestos removal at $1,190 to $3,255.
Failed spray foam
Occasionally we see spray foam that was badly installed: pulled away from the framing, shrunken, or with lingering odor. Removing foam is slow work by hand, which is why it costs more per square foot than loose fill. Fixr puts foam removal at $1.50 to $3 per square foot, and up to about $5 when it has to be chipped off.
Replacement
Most removal jobs end with air sealing and new insulation. We quote removal, sealing and new insulation as separate lines so you can see each part.

Insulation Removal Questions
Do I have to remove old insulation before adding new?
Not always. If it is dry, clean and not hiding air leaks that need sealing, new insulation can go on top. Wet, moldy, rodent-soiled or vermiculite insulation should come out or be tested first.
How much does insulation removal cost?
HomeAdvisor lists $1 to $2 per square foot and a typical job of $600 to $1,200. The written estimate after we look is the price.
Is removing spray foam expensive?
It costs more than removing loose fill because it is cut or scraped off by hand. HomeGuide lists $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot and Fixr up to about $5 when it has to be chipped.
What do you do with the old insulation?
It is bagged or collected and hauled away for disposal. We include disposal in the removal line.
